Kuching's waterfront is lined with a mix of historic colonial and traditional Malay architecture

Malays, Chinese, Iban and Bidayuh have lived in Kuching for generations, a history best appreciated through the flavourful street food. Take a walk along the waterfront to experience dishes like Laksa Sarawak – a rich broth made with spices and rice noodles, and topped with shrimp and chicken strips – and Kolo Mee, a noodle dish with ground pork, fried shallots and garnished with chives.

Across the water you’ll see Malay kampongs (traditional houses) contrasted with 19th-century landmarks like The Astana – former palace of the ‘White Rajahs’ – and Fort Margherita, built to fend off pirates.

To the northeast of Kuching lies Bako National Park – an isolated natural wonderland reached by a boat ride along the Santubong river. Here, jungle trails weave through mangrove swamps and dense rainforest, and take you to seemingly-undiscovered beaches. Expect face-to-face encounters with proboscis monkeys, wild boars and monitor lizards along the way. If you take a night safari, you may even spot a flying lemur gliding overhead.

Kuching stays hot and mainly dry all year, and is busiest in the summer months between March and October when festivals like Hari Raya Aidilfitri (6 July) and Gawai Day (31 May) are celebrated. Heavy showers occur frequently during monsoon season (between November and February) but this is the best time to visit for low prices.
